Garnet Color Variations

January - Garnet is the birthstone for the month of January.

Most people assume garnet is a dark red stone, but a garnet is found in every color except blue.

A family of garnet consists of:
Almandite Garnet: A reddish orange to red garnet.
Andradite Garnet: A yellow, green, brown, or black garnet.
Grossularite Garnet: Green, yellow garnet.
Malaya Garnet: Pinkish orange or reddish orange garnet.
Hydrogrossular Garnet: Translucent green
Pyrope Garnet: Lighter to Dark red garnet
Rhodolite Garnet: Light to dark pink to purplish red.
Spessarite Garnet: Yellowish orange to reddish orange


The word Garnet comes from the Latin word "Granatus" which means "seed like". It was referred to as seed like because many believed it had the same shape and color of a pomegranate seed.

Folklore- The gem stone garnet in the past was exchange between friends which symbolized affection. This birthstones attribute include curing, safety and also helps depression.

Legend holds that Noah hung a large garnet in the ark for illumination. It reportedly also gives its wearer guidance in the night, protection from nightmares, and according to the Egyptians, is an antidote for snake bites and food poisoning. It was also thought to have a special affinity with the blood. Garnets are durable and brilliant and will give years of pleasure.
