OPAL

White opal has a white or light body color with flashes of many colors. Black opal has a black, dark blue, dark green or gray body color with vivid flashes of color such as red, pink and bright green. Opal is formed by silica when it is liquefied and then hardened. The word opal is derived from the Greek word 'Opallios' which means changing colors.

There are several legends and folklores that are associated with opal. Opal has symbolized hope, innocence and purity through the ages. In the middle ages, young, fair-haired girls wore opals in their hair to protect its lovely blond color. Medieval writers believed opal could render its wearer invisible when the need arose. It was also said to have a beneficial effect on eyesight. It was thought to banish evil spirits and favor children, the theater, amusements, friendships and feelings. In England it is said to bring good luck, In France opals are said to bring bad luck. In some cultures it is known to cause passionate moments, others believe it is spiritually uplifting. Opal has been known to uncover emotions and symbolizes confidence, serenity and purity.

Do not use a home ultrasonic machine or jewelry cleaner. Care should be taken to protect it from scratches, sharp blows, household chemicals, and extreme temperature changes. To maintain the brilliance of opal, it should be wiped clean with a soft cloth.

Tourmalines name is derived from a Sinhalese word 'Turmali' which actually mean every color of the spectrum. This is do to the fact that Tourmaline occurs in a variety of colors but the most popular colors are green, pink and red. Because it has such brilliant colors and is affordable it is a popular gemstone for making jewelry. It is found in many parts of the world such as Burma, Indian and Brazil. Different names were given to the colors of tourmaline which are:

Chrome Tourmaline: Dark green Tourmaline

Indicolite Tourmaline: Deep blue to Blue-green Tourmaline

Rubellite Tourmaline: Deep red Tourmaline

Watermelon Tourmaline: A pink and green Tourmaline

There are several legends and folklores that are associated with tourmaline. Tourmaline was said to cool tempers, foster compassion, and helping meditate. Tourmaline jewelry was said to protect against many dangers. It was said that the wearer would be enlightened, gain spiritual powers and the power to change metals to gold which made it popular amongst alchemist.
