Necklaces

Gold chains and collars have been popular as jewelry for both men and women since ancient times. They have been used to convey differences between cultures, social class, financial status, religion, and having found favor with royalty.

A variety of materials may be used to make necklaces, including all of the precious metals, as well as leather, velvet, shells, and many other items.

Pendants differ from necklaces in the sense that a pendant is a single item, much like a charm, that is suspended from the necklace. Popular pendants include lockets and gemstones.

Necklace buying tips

When you buy your special lady a necklace, you give yourself the opportunity to put it around her neck for the first time and bask in the glow of her happy surprise. And every time she wears it, she will be reminded of your thoughtfulness. Classic styles go with everything in her wardrobe, so you can’t go wrong with a strand of pearls or a delicate chain in any precious metal. If you’re thinking of something extra special that she would probably wear only on special occasions, a necklace set with diamonds or gemstones can be a real stunner. Solitaire pendants put the focus on the one diamond, gemstone, or locket suspended from the chain. These pieces can be worn with anything from an evening gown to jeans and a sweater. And if you get her a locket, putting a photo of the two of you (or your children) inside is an extra thoughtful touch she’ll treasure.

Lengths

A necklace may be of any length, from a choker to a very long rope necklace that may be doubled around the neck. Below are the lengths as described by the jewelry industry:

  • *Choker* - Anywhere from a snug-fitting cloth or velvet band around the neck to 16 inches (just above the collarbone). This length will emphasize the neckline.
  • *Princess* - 18 inches long. This is the most common length of both necklaces and pendants.
  • *Opera* - 24 inches long. Chain will fall over the front of the blouse or dress. Really makes a statement.

If your gift recipient has a penchant for history, she may appreciate a replica necklace of a museum piece or a specific era in history. Jeweler.com is your best source for finding the most up-to-date information on necklaces, pendants, and current fashion jewelry trends.
